Pros and Cons of using generic drug

Generic medicines are those that contain the same active ingredient, the ingredient takes part to cure the condition in which the medicine is used for treatment, in the same amount as a brand medicine. Generic medicines, therefore, have the same effect on the body in terms of curing the disease as branded medicines.

However, generic drugs are sold under a different name and may contain several inactive ingredients that give the product its taste, shape, smell, etc. but which do not affect the body to ease the health condition compared to brand counterparts. it should not be confused with fake drugs, which are illegally manufactured copies that may or may not contain the same active ingredient.

The type and quantity of the active ingredient in the generic product are the same as the branded version, but the inactive ingredients are slightly different. Generic medicine is sold under a different brand name and may look different for example in color or shape to the original.

Generic drugs seem to become increasingly popular when it comes to major brand drugs, including many heart-related medicines such as statins and blood pressure medicines. But exactly how safe are generic drugs when it comes to keeping your heart healthy? Let's look at some of the pros and cons of generic medicines below.

Pros-

Cheaper prices. The main reason why so many people buy generic drugs is that they are much cheaper than brand drugs. Brand name drugs require research and testing that takes a lot of time and money, but generic drugs should only copy what's already existing, saving them and allowing the price to remain low.

Bioequivalent. Biologically, generic drugs must comply strict guidelines so that the same amount of active ingredient is delivered to the body at the same time and used by the body, just as the brand name drug.

Approved by the FDA. The FDA establishes rigorous guidelines and carries out research on generic medicines to make sure they are bioequivalent to the branded drug.

Healthy heart. According to a recent study, generic heart medications show the same medical results as brand drugs.

Cons-

Contamination. Generic medicines are often manufactured in factories in countries like India, China or other areas with labor and overhead. The conditions of these factories have sometimes contaminated drugs. To be honest, however, there have been some cases where US-based drug medicines also had similar problems, though probably not nearly as often.

Oversights. According to a report by the government accountability office, these foreign factories sometimes escape FDA's strict inspections, skip the documentation of their practices, and do not receive follow-up monitoring even when serious production problems or drug management problems have been identified. Generally, only one manufacturer produces a branded drug while several manufacturers can produce a generic drug. While the FDA insists on the bioequivalence of the active drug, sometimes there may be slight differences in the drug or inactive drug delivery system for the drug. These differences rarely lead to a clinically significant problem for the patient, although in rare cases a patient may have a sensitivity or intolerance to a different type of fillers or delivery system.

Mixing up the pills. Because brand drugs generally have a consistent "branded" look for them that patients can get familiar and comfortable with, generics often do not seem familiar or is not as obvious as every pill is. Also, when a prescription is refilled, if the drug is made by different generic producer and has a different appearance, this can lead to confusion of medication confusion and mistakes or even patients not taking the pills they are prescribed.

Physicians remain divided. Many medical professionals are still divided on the use of generic drugs for heart disease, leaving some persistent doubt in this area. Some specific medications, including thyroid supplements and blood thinners, have shown significant clinically meaningful problems when switching from brand to generic or between generics.
